Last night, I sat by my baby’s cot, stroking her back as she tried to sleep.
A horrible cough kept waking her up every time she started to slide into slumber. I rested my hand on her back and hummed soothing lullabies and she coughed and spluttered and covered me with trails of snot. As I hummed, I remembered my own mum humming and stroking my back as I tried to sleep with various ailments - coughs, colds, tummy bugs and the like. She would sing ‘She Was A Dear Little Dicky Bird’. I sing ‘Baby Mine’. I wonder what Ivy will sing.
